Harrah's Announces Upgrade to Atlantic City Caesars and Showboat

Caesars and Bally's, two aging casinos that have lost some of their cachet in recent years, will be given a makeover to upgrade their "grossly substandard" hotel rooms, their new owner said Thursday. Harrah's Entertainment Inc., which acquired Caesars Entertainment Inc. in June for $9 billion, is studying ways to expand the Boardwalk casinos and expects to announce its development plans by year's end or early 2006. Caesars and Bally's both opened in 1979 and are in need of improvements to keep pace with younger competitors.

"The hotel product in Atlantic City in those two buildings is grossly substandard and we know we have to fix that," said Gary Loveman, chairman and CEO of Harrah's Entertainment. "There should be more rooms, and the rooms that we have should be more appealing."

Loveman's blunt comments came during a question-and-answer period with gaming analysts during a conference call to announce Harrah's third-quarter earnings.

He noted that the Roman-themed Caesars will be helped next year by the grand opening of The Pier at Caesars, a $175 million shopping and entertainment complex featuring ultra-upscale retailers such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany.

Comments & Discussion:

I only been to AC once. I think, looking at it that they could only expand upward, and not out. Also, if AC wants to really expands business wise, they should have better transportation in and out of AC. The airlines don't seem to care to fly there. Amtrak should have a direct route into AC with the NE corridor.
