Major Changes at the Golden Nugget

Ninety to 100 Golden Nugget employees will be laid off in connection with renovations at the Golden Nugget Las Vegas, according to hotel management.

"We're going to have to close a zone of the casino floor to do renovation or construction," says Chief Operating Officer André Carrier. "We have some back-of-house functions that may be affected because we won't have the revenue associated with that restaurant or that outlet during that period of time," which he projects as taking from a year to 18 months.

Carrier positions the revamping of the Nugget, which began with the porte cochere on Casino Center Drive, as the catalyst for additional growth in Glitter Gulch.

"This is going to be a downtown district that has re-emerged, just like other downtown districts in America," Carrier says, likening the prospective rejuvenation of urban Vegas to what has been done in Cleveland, Denver, Baltimore's inner harbor and San Diego's Gaslamp district. "Here we are, completely vested in that vision and making it a reality," Carrier says, "but we're not making it a reality in the future. We started two weeks ago."

The Golden Nugget COO blames some of the displacement on the constrictive nature of reshaping a downtown property that owns only a limited footprint, likening the process to working a Rubik's Cube. "You have to take a piece out to put a piece in," Carrier said. At the end of the road, though, we're going to have a bigger facility. It's going to have more amenities and attractions than it's ever had, and we're going to have more employees here."

But process of change is not going over well with all Golden Nugget employees. While Carrier declined to specify where the job cuts would fall, one employee, who asked not to identified, reports, "They're pretty much laying off in every department," with meetings being held to determine how many employees each department can carry. "All the bartenders and cocktail waitresses are afraid they're going to get laid off," he continued. "Everybody's walking on eggshells."
