More Gambling Tales of Michael (23 Red) Jordan

If there’s one thing -- other than performance-enhancing drugs or hip hop clothing -- that makes professional and college sports officials quake in their shoes, it’s gambling.

You can imagine, then, the nervous twitch that National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern developed in the 1990s amid speculation that Michael Jordan had a gambling problem.

When the Chicago Bulls were in New York for the playoffs, for example, Jordan hightailed it to Atlantic City for a night of unwinding.

There were reports that Jordan ran up huge debts in golf matches — allegedly as high as $1 million — and that a “gambling problem” was the reason he abruptly retired before the start of the 1993-94 season to pursue a minor league baseball career.

None of this was substantiated, and Jordan returned to the Bulls late in the 1994-95 season to add a few more championship baubles.
