Interview with Penn Gillette about cheating at poker from http://www.radaronline.com:

RADAR: So this poker cheat Dickie picked you up when you were hitchhiking across country when you were 18, told you all his secrets, and gave you 500 bucks. Do you think he had pervy intentions?

PENN JILLETTE: I don’t think so. And not because he’s beyond it, but more because I hitchhiked for eight months and no one ever hit on me. I think that has to do with the fact that I was a less attractive 18-year-old boy than many other 18-year-olds.

Dickie states that one of the primary rules of being a card cheat is that you never, ever tell a soul your line of work. Why did he tell you?

You’ll also notice in the book that Dickie contradicts everything he says. He says you will never get caught, and then he says, “Here’s what you can do if you get caught.” He says, “You should never leave cards under the table,” and then he’ll follow that with, “Here’s what happened the time I left cards under the table.”

So why did he want all his secrets out now? Was it dough he was after?

Although he is making money on the book, I don’t think it’s as much as he’d make cheating for six months, now that Texas Hold ’Em is so popular. Money is always a motivator, but maybe the Catholic Church is right. Maybe confession is good for the soul. For him, I don’t think he sees it as a how-to book as much as a confession.
