15 North
An interesting little article from the Los Angeles Daily Bulletin:
From Southern California, Sin City is a beacon. Its lights glitter seductively. Glaring electronic signs scream promises of decadence and wealth. Vegas, baby. It's where thousands of Southern Californians want to be and where they are awaited with open arms and open cash registers.
But where would those anxious hordes be without their link, their soul, their road? Where would all these people be without the 15 Freeway? To members of the Las Vegas business community, these visitors are money. And, more than any other route, the dusty desert path cut by the freeway is the best way there.
In fact, Southern Californians provide a financial foundation for Las Vegas. About a third of all Vegas visitors are Californians, according to a survey of 3,300 people conducted by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority in 2004.
Though the survey did not differentiate between north and south, experts from Caltrans, the Vegas visitors group and the California Highway Patrol suspect Southern Californians make up the majority. Statistics collected by the Center for Business and Economic Research at UNLV show that of 37.4 million annual visitors who drove into the city in 2004, 27 percent arrived from Southern California.
"Las Vegas is just close enough that you can do it on a weekend comfortably," CHP officer Steve White said. "There's a tremendous number of people that go out to Las Vegas and (Lake) Havasu. The traffic going to Las Vegas is so much heavier than it used to be."
