From the Las Vegas Business Press:

A relative newcomer to the casino business, developer Garry Goett is preparing to bet big on the evolving south Strip. Goett, who made his name as creator of the Southern Highlands golf course and luxury planned community, hopes to carry gaming success in the Carson City market into a Las Vegas locals scene dominated by the Station and Coast brands.

To achieve this, Goett is prepared to spend $750 million on his Southern Highlands Casino-Resort, slated for a summer 2008 debut on 100 acres at Interstate 15 and St. Rose Parkway. Six years ago, the $276 million spent by Swiss Casinos on the Resort at Summerlin was considered an astronomical amount to lavish on a suburban hotel-casino, well in excess of the going rate. The Resort at Summerlin entered bankruptcy within a matter of months and now shares management with the Cannery Hotel & Casino in North Las Vegas.

A fall 2006 groundbreaking is planned for Southern Highlands Casino-Resort, since the design phase is expected to take the better part of a year, according to a company official. The lead architect is Reno-based Peter Wilday, whose credits include the current expansion of the Peppermill hotel-casino near the Reno-Sparks convention center. Wilday also designed Goett's Casino Fandango in Carson City and is one of its minority owners.

[ This has got to be the worst name for a casino. When asked why they settled on that name... SH honcho Goett said "Mondo was taken." Which is actually the fucking worst name for a casino. Leave it to Phil Ruffin to implode the New Frontier and actually make it worse than it was previously. - Ed ]
