Interview With Nevada Gaming Control Board Commissioner
Q: Consumers often have misconceptions about the way slot machines work. What do you think is the biggest misconception that people have about slots?
A: Most people realize they're made to profit. The way a slot machine works is that it's set within a certain parameter and the random-number generator starts every play over again. People tend to think that somehow there's somebody manipulating something, but that's not true. There's a random-number generator in every device and we test that random-number generator to make sure it's true. That conception that there's someone behind the curtain pushing a button is just a myth that has grown over the years. The reality is that it has nothing to do with anybody.
Q: So there's no such thing as a "hot machine?"
A: No. Every play is random. I think people do tend to think that this thing hasn't hit in awhile so it's ready to hit. The machine doesn't know that. It's a computer.
