Can I Borrow Your Lighter? Dept: Casino Air Quality Probed

The Iowa health department and the state attorney general say high-tech air-handling systems the state's casinos are installing to remove clouds of cigarette smoke do not make the air safer to breathe.

Bobbie Bohnsack, a consultant on tobacco issues for the Iowa Department of Public Health, says the best way casinos can address the issue is by voluntarily banning smoking.

The casino industry, which draws 20 million customers annually in Iowa who leave behind about one billion dollars, contends it can safely accommodate smokers and nonsmokers without prohibiting tobacco use. None of Iowa's casinos prohibit smoking, although some have designated nonsmoking areas.
