Atlantic City's Borgata To Expand - So Does AC
Finamore said that Boyd is planning to add 850-900 rooms to the Borgata in two years' time, by which point Atlantic City might also see a W hotel (part of the Starwood chain) and new condominium development by Donald Trump.
The proliferation of high-end amenities, including the Venetian's Canyon Ranch Spa, is expected to continue on the Strip and in Atlantic City.
The expanded Borgata is also expected to include restaurants overseen by celebrity chefs Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck.
"There's a lot of interest but there isn't the frenzied activity that you see in Las Vegas," Finamore said of the New Jersey casino metropolis. Development would be more easily spurred, the Boyd executive opined, by a focused plan at the state and municipal levels, possibly including tax abatements.
Finamore also stated that room rates in Atlantic City are so high that the existing hotels aren't delivering value for the money customers have to pay and that the city needs the Vegas-type amenities that would support additional room capacity. That capacity, he said, was not keeping pace with demand, a shortfall that helped keep Atlantic City from being an international attraction.
