More Details on Wynn Macau

The first phase of the Wynn casino, which is due to open in August next year, includes a lavish 9300sqm gaming area, which will accommodate 200 tables and 380 slot machines, a five-star, 600-room hotel tower, a ballroom, six restaurants and a 70m-wide man-made lake that will feature a water fountain show set to music.

The success of the first Las Vegas-style casino in Macau under the new licenses -- the $320 million Sands which opened in April last year and has already paid for itself -- is believed to have encouraged the Wynn group to push ahead with the second phase of development earlier than originally planned.

The second phase, which is set to open in the first half of 2007, includes 8000sqm of gambling space for 150 tables and another 500 slot machines, two more restaurants, 3000sqm of convention space and an entertainment facility.

There are also rumours in Macau that the Wynn group could be looking at another, much larger development across the water, closer to the site pegged out for the big "City of Dreams" casino development announced by Kerry Packer's PBL and Melco International, a company associated with Stanley's Ho's 28-year-old son, Lawrence.

The Wynn group is also bidding for one of two casino-hotel projects under consideration in Singapore, expected to be decided in the next few months.

If it gets the nod, Leighton is also hoping its work on the Macau casino will give it the inside running for that job.

Leighton first came to Macau in 2001 when it was appointed to project-manage the Fisherman's Wharf entertainment and theme park near the Macau ferry terminal.
