UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- It's a sunny crisp day as gamblers file into the Mohegan Sun casino. Most on this typical Friday morning are retirees, some getting around with canes or wheelchairs, and a few with oxygen tanks in tow.

Mike Sanzo, 73, of Newington, stops by the race book to check out the day's action. He comes to Mohegan Sun a few times a week to bet on horse races, while his wife hits the slots. They each spend about $40 and confer later on how they did.

Sanzo says he gambles for fun and enjoys the friends he's made among other regulars at the casino, since he retired from a career installing signs for the state highway department.

"I'm retired, and it exercises my brain," Sanzo said.

A Yale University study of older recreational gamblers backs Sanzo up. They found that gambling of any kind is associated with some health benefits.

Recreational gamblers 65 and older report being in better health than their peers who do not gamble, and they reported less alcoholism, depression, bankruptcy and imprisonment than younger recreational gamblers, Yale epidemiologist Rani Desai said.
