Save La Concha!
A student-led preservation group has been trying to save the La Concha Motel lobby from implosion, hoping to raise enough money to move the arched concrete and shiny glass structure to another location on the Las Vegas Strip.
Preserve Nevada, a statewide organization based at UNLV, on Thursday designated the La Concha lobby as one of Nevada's 11 most endangered sites and said it will need to raise $400,000 to move the landmark to the Neon Museum two miles down the road.
The group has less than 6 months to raise the funds.
"In preservation it usually takes more than the imminent threat," said UNLV history professor Andrew Kirk, who oversees the group. "It takes the actual destruction to get people up in arms, but by then it is too late."
