The Steve vs. The Donald

Scrooge, Sweedlepipe, Honeythunder, Pickwick and Trump? Onomastics--the study of names--in Charles Dickens' work is an interesting undertaking. For several of Dickens' character names function as aptronyms--a name that fits a person's nature or occupation. You could imagine billionaire Donald Trump as the nonpareil entrepreneur in a Dickens tome; forever outgunning, surpassing, nay trumping his rivals in his bid to build the biggest and the best. "We're going to be the top of the heap," he trumpeted while breaking ground Tuesday on a $500 million luxury hotel-condominium--which will, naturally, be the tallest residential building on the Las Vegas Strip. They say only neurotics build castles in the sky, and psychotics live in them--but Trump said condos, priced from $600,000 to $6 million, sold out within a week. The proudly named Trump International Hotel & Tower Las Vegas, which will be built across the way from the spanking new Wynn Resorts (nasdaq: WYNN - news - people )-owned Wynn Las Vegas resort, will boast 1,282 luxury residential and hotel units, a spa and restaurants--but no casino. Trump has plans for a gambling den elsewhere, as well a second tower sometime soon. A fellow billionaire aptronym, Stephen Wynn, cheered Trump's presence on the strip: "I'm glad Donald's here. Donald jazzes up the neighborhood," Wynn was quoted as saying in the Associated Press.
