Roll Them Bones
It was a Friday night, and we'd been on our feet for more than four hours. Our legs were sore, our hearts were racing and we were sucking down bottles of water like they were going out of style.
Those craps tables can really take it out of you.
If you don't understand the game, the table can be the most intimidating place in a casino. Chips are flying, dice are rolling, people are shouting "Odds on the come bet!" or "Dollar yo!" The tables are often jammed elbow to elbow, with a row of interested bystanders crowding you from behind, and the person two inches from your face is smoking a really smelly cigar with ash hanging perilously close to your shoulder.
It is, in short, a scary place for a first-timer.
It's also the most exciting game around, which is why my friend Jo and I had decided to take a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas - arrive Friday night, leave Sunday morning - and play as much craps as our pocketbooks would allow. In real life, I'm a generally sensible (read: cheap) person; at the craps table, my inner Scrooge clashes with my inner degenerate gambler and doesn't always come out ahead. Jo is just as bad as I am, so we decided to establish some ground rules before hitting the casinos.
First, we could only spend the money we had in our wallets. No hitting the ATM, no heading back to the hotel room for more money. Next, if we were winning, there was no dipping back into the original stake. Finally, no matter how far we had to walk, we would only play at tables with a $5 minimum bet or lower.
We shook on it. It was time to start playing.
