Strip high-roller play can now be tracked in much the same manner that Wal-Mart monitors the movement of goods and services within its system.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's Peacock Lounge is one of the first venues in town to put "smart" casino chips into play on its green felt. The chips -- which are embedded with radio-frequency identification (RDIF) hardware -- are available in denominations of $25 and higher.

"It's been a big success, very seamless," said Hard Rock Vice President of Casino Operations Bart Pestrichello. The chips, manufactured by Gaming Partners International, look "almost identical" to regular chips, according to Pestrichello, except for being slightly larger so they can be returned to the Peacock Lounge.

TableLink bet-tracking systems, made by Progressive Gaming (formerly Mikohn Gaming) enables casino managers to track the location and movements of bets. "The system can read a stack of chips about 30 high," Pestrichello said, adding that the chips can only be tracked when they are in betting spots on the tabletop.
