Frommers: Vegas, That Other Shrine to Emptiness
[ The travel columnist from San Francisco Chronicle sure is a pithy bastard. We will post our rebuttle shortly. - Ed ]
Looking for nonsense on your summer vacation? Simple frivolity? Laughter and thrills? America's amusement parks vie with Las Vegas in providing those mindless conditions, and a travel writer must occasionally pay them some attention. So here's a quick review of this year's most irresponsible escapes:
In Las Vegas, that other shrine to emptiness, throngs of visitors struck silent by the magnificence of their surroundings are currently passing through the public areas of the new, $2.7 billion Wynn Las Vegas Resort -- gawking at the hotel's Ferrari dealership, the mountain in front, the 18-hole golf course and no fewer than 22 restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Here, too, this exercise in excess is a form of entertainment appealing to the senses, not the brain. In a near-catatonic state, you simply wander from one outsized structure to another, not for the purpose of actually using their facilities, but simply to be overawed.
The shows of Las Vegas are also all spectacle without content, involving no thought on the part of the viewer. Rather than pay to be patronized, the smart tourist sees exactly the same spectacle for nary a cent by visiting the free-of-charge White Tiger Habitat at the Mirage, the outdoor free-of-charge "Sirens of TI" show at Treasure Island, or the "Fountains" show for no admission at the Bellagio.
