Almost effortlessly, illusionist Rick Thomas flies up smoothly to join his assistant, who is levitating horizontally about 10 feet off the ground.

Suspended in mid-air, the Vegas man of mirrors and myth removes the sheet covering his aide, who has apparently vanished and seems to float all alone. While this might seem like a typical Vegas show, this is not the typical audience.

Watching intently are more than 5,000 McDonald's Corp. store managers, who are taking part in a unique training exercise that will ultimately cost the company and its owner-operators more than $20 million.

The illusion was designed to show that almost anything is possible, one of the many Vegas-style motivational tools McDonald's is employing at the Mandalay Bay resort to help improve the performance of store managers and their assistants. But it also has a very serious business imperative.

Management and major suppliers are using the massive biennial road show to speak directly to some of their most vital employees and focus them on the chain's priorities: the need to continue improving on service and speed and to innovate with new products.
