Positively Flamingo Road - McManus on WSOP
I arrived at the Rio at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, and by 12:18 was playing in the $2,500 limit Texas hold'em event. Like every World Series of Poker tournament, this one provided a dollar-for-dollar chip stack. With the first round of blinds set at $25-$25, and limits of $25-$50, everyone began with a reasonable, if not especially generous, amount of play for the money. (The more chips, the merrier: tournaments at the Bellagio, including the World Poker Tour main event in April, provide players with twice the buy-in amount to play with.)
World Series events certainly have their advantages, though. With fields of over 2,000 players, you can multiply your investment by a factor of over 500. You can also win a World Series bracelet, far and away the most coveted piece of hardware in pokerdom. Players routinely lose the prize money in other poker action (or in pit games like backjack or craps, or betting on sports) but a bracelet can be worn, fondled and passed around among friends and family for generations.
After 35 years in the increasing crowded quarters of Binion's Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas, the action this year takes place in a 60,000-square-foot hangar-scale gaming area called the Amazon Room, equipped with more than 200 poker tables manned (and womaned) by 450 dealers in rotating shifts.
