Note to Self: Don't Murder Bookie After Paying Off Markers

Mark Orlando told police he was stunned when moments after he paid off a $17,000 gambling debt, his friend from work pulled out a gun and executed his bookmaker's runner.

But a Mineola jury didn't buy that. It thought Orlando helped plan Bobby Calabrese's murder and Thursday found the Bay Shore man guilty of second-degree murder.

"They came up with the correct decision," said the victim's father, Robert Calabrese, 50, of Long Beach, as he hugged dozens of well-wishers after the verdict. Outside, a few people in a crowd of Calabrese's friends and relatives serenaded Orlando as he was driven away in a sheriff's van singing the chorus to the Steam and Jeronimo song: "Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye."

Assistant District Attorney Bob Hayden said he will seek the maximum of 25 years to life when Nassau County Court Judge David Sullivan sentences Orlando July 29.

Orlando's attorney, Dennis Lemke of Mineola, said his client hoped to be acquitted.

"Mark and his family were extremely shocked by the verdict," he said. "Clearly there was reasonable doubt as to Mr. Orlando's motive."
