A Chat With Steve Wynn

Steve Wynn built his newest luxury resort hotel for $2.7 billion, but his office -- on the ground floor of Wynn Las Vegas, not in the penthouse -- is almost spartan by comparison. His desk is middle-manager small, and there are few furnishings. The best thing about it is the view: lush foliage, shade trees, a sprawling yard and lots of privacy.

Two super-sized German shepherds -- guard dogs and house pets that Wynn unabashedly kisses on the nose -- sleep nearby. They barely stir as their owner, slurping a protein shake from a straw, moves from his desk to a small sitting area that consists of a sofa, two chairs and a coffee table. A public-relations assistant is close by.

Quiet at first, Wynn becomes animated as soon as he's asked about his hotel.

On the TV commercial in which he's seen standing on top of his 50-story hotel:

"They built a platform that was 48 inches high, six inches higher than the top of the building. . . . and there was a hole in the platform, and a nylon rope as thick as my thumb with a hook on the end. I wore a belt around my waist that had a loop on the back. A 2 1/2-inch plumbing pipe came up with the rope in it, and the stuntman locked the pipe in place."
