Governator OKs San Fran Tribal Casino
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has thrown his support behind a massive Indian casino to be built near San Francisco that could raise up to $125 million in annual taxes to fill the state's looming budget hole, a source close to their talks said on Wednesday.
Schwarzenegger has agreed to a compact with the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians, giving the state's blessing to the 255-member tribe to build and operate the first major Indian casino in an urban area of California, the official said.
The casino would further open the door to Las Vegas-style gambling in the state's cities. Numerous local tribes already operate small casinos, but Las Vegas resorts, which rely heavily on visitors from California, have long lobbied against legislation to expand big, glitzy operations.
