Comments & Discussion:

I awakened this morning to listen to the VegasGang interview with Derek Stevens. He may be an MBA who is also CEO of a manufacturing company/companies in the Detroit area, but he is a true entrepreneur who has found his calling in Downtown Las Vegas.

There are several reasons Downtown is in a resurgence, but the main reason is Derek Stevens. Without his vision, The D Las Vegas would still be plodding along as a failing Fitzgerald's and Golden Gate wouldn't have regained its prominence at 1 Fremont Street. And, now we have learned more about the exciting future of Las Vegas Club. Derek loves being in the center of the action with his creativity (deservedly so), but I believe Greg Stevens should also get his share of the credit. He may be working behind the scenes, but both brothers have made Downtown happen.

Derek said at VIMFP that the entire downtown community is important. When asked how Golden Nugget reacted to all of the events at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, Derek said they're even including DLVEC's events calendar in their promotional mailings.

Recognition also needs to be given to Nicole Stevens. Derek's and Nicole's visibility are unmatched. Can you imagine Steve and Andrea, or Jim and Heather, being the personal face of their properties to ALL guests or personally hosting events such as VIMFP? Such goodwill.

I didn't attend VIMFP, but I did stay at The D last month. A great experience. I'm not in the downtown demographic, but the future looks bright thanks in large part to Derek Stevens.

Totally agree with detroit1051. As a non-Downtown fan I'm in awe of what he -- they -- have accomplished. A CEO who Gets It *despite* his MBA. The complete opposite direction from MGM and perhaps Caesars.

Almost makes me want to see that Steve Jobs flick, though the PBS Disney bio was thoroughly enjoyable for much the same reasons. (And having briefly encountered Derek at VT10, and heard the many accounts of bloggers & podcasters, he seems utterly free of the assholery those other two gentlemen were amply capable of. At least, from what we in the public are able to see.)
