Mandalay Bay Vibe Dining at Kumi
We've uncovered some design details about the former China Grill space at Mandalay Bay which was taken over by the Light Group late last year and promptly closed.
The new restaurant, Kumi, will remain structurally the same as previous, but with refreshed interiors courtesy of Canadian design firm Munge Leung. The new interiors will feature Asian inspired decor wrapped in a web of knotted ropes extending from floor to knot to ceiling at various angles. Decor will have a dark blue base, mint, bronze and latte colored glasswork accented by floors and ceilings etched with a gold Asian character patterns. The main rotunda space will be wrapped in cherry blossom tree prints.
In addition to the bar, main dining room and private dining area, Kumi will feature a sushi bar festooned in imperial blue ceramic glazed roof tiles - GAK! Just when you thought that the Imperial Palace/Quad transition would banish blue glazed ceramic roof tiles to the scrap heap of Vegas history.
The design? Javiers with Asian touches.
The food? Basically, Javiers with Asian touches and a sushi bar.
The vibe? Sorta Javiers with Asian touches and a bitchin' sound system.

I think more Lemongrass than Javier's for some reason. Lame either way it sounds. I'd like to be proven wrong.
HA! I was thinking (vibing) Lemongrass and Javier's too.
I actually liked China Grill. I was sad to see it go. One of the better happy hours in Mandalay Bay.
Munge Leunge sounds like something you get from aspirating a bean.
