1829: Discovered by Spanish explorers.
1855: First settlement by Mormon missionaries from Salt Lake City.
1905: Town established by auctioning of land.
1926: First commercial airline flight by Western Airlines.
1931: Gambling legalized in Nevada. Hoover Dam construction begins.
1941: El Rancho Vegas, first hotel on the Strip, opens.
1942: Last Frontier (now New Frontier) Hotel opens.
1946: Mobster Bugsy [Ben. No one calls him Bugsy. Let's show some respect. - MissMo] Siegel opens Flamingo Hotel.
1959: Las Vegas Convention Center opens.
1966: Howard Hughes arrives to live at Desert Inn.
1989: Mirage opens.
1993: MGM Grand Hotel and Theme Park - largest resort hotel-casino in world - opens.
1995: Fremont Street Experience opens in downtown Las Vegas.
1996: Wayne Newton celebrates 25,000th Las Vegas performance. Siegfried and Roy celebrate 15,000th Las Vegas performance. Las Vegas Motor Speedway opens.
2004: Las Vegas Monorail, a $654 million mass transit systems, opens.
2005: Las Vegas will celebrate its 100th birthday today with the world's largest birthday cake and a re-creation of the 1905 land auction that gave the city its start. - Source: Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority
