Def Leppard Announces Dates, Disses Wayne

Big news today in the world of Vegas rock and roll.... New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) stalwarts Def Leppard have announced a nine show residency at The Joint inside the Hard Rock. Singer Joe Elliott broke the news by urinating on Wayne Newton.

We're very happy to be part of what I call the first wave of rockers to take Vegas back from the lounge singers - Wayne Newton and his type."

A) You're not part of the first wave of rockers, you're in the twenty fifth wave of rockers. Perhaps you might remember a chap named Elvis Presley. B) Wayne Fucking Newton's career has been essentially over for about five years.

The stand - entitled VIVA Hysteria - will consist of the band playing their 20x platinum 1987 #1 album Hysteria in its entirety. I know you guys know this, but Hysteria was the album that put Def Leppard back on track after a 3 year, post-Pyromania hiatus. Most bands would've given up after the heart of the group Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident on New Years Eve 1984. Not Def Leppard. With the help of new drum technology, Rick Allen learned how to play the drums again and the band painstakingly spent the next two years in and out of the studio perfecting the songs that became Hysteria.

Hysteria picked up where 1983's equally perfect yet infinitely grittier Pyromania left off and brought the music deeply into the 80's while retaining Def Leppard's 1970's rock sensibility in full display.

What resulted was one of the most polished, perfect hard pop albums ever recorded. The swirling atmosphereic opening and big beat of Women shows off the entire record in a nutshell - a perfectly recorded, expertly arranged (and some would say overly produced) bombast of taut rock, stripped bare and dressed up in sexy choruses and stiletto riffs.

Personally, if I had to choose a favorite Def Leppard record to base a residency around, it would be Pyromania. At this time Def Leppard was still toying with NWOBHM mysticism (as perfected by Iron Maiden) and the songs just plain rocked without the frills and the synth bass lines.

It is probably worth nothing that Hysteria was produced by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange the man responsible for the last Bon Scott and first two Brian Johnson AC/DC albums (Highway to Hell, Back In Black and For Those About To Rock) and for Caesars Palace headliner Shania Twain's crossover success from Contemporary Christian artist to Country Pop Rock goddess.

Comments & Discussion:

Kudos to Hard Rock for actually rocking. These rock residencies are a welcome alternative to all the disco on the Strip.

Damn, about 2 weeks too early for our planned trip. I would love to see them again, since I remember NOTHING about the show I saw back in the early or mid or late 80's. I do remember trying to act somewhat un-fucked-up trying to impress that new little hot chick that I was with, but she saw right through the red eyes. We will hopefully celebrate our 27th anniversary in Vegas in late April...

Great... now I have Mariah Carey's cover of "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" stuck in my head.

Is it bad that I would actually rather see a lounge singer?

I would go if they were doing High N Dry.

I like Def Leppard, but they aren't even the first rock band to do a residency at the hard Rock, much less Las Vegas, and the cheap shot at Wayne Newton just makes them look like dicks.

Would've made sense if he said it back in 1987. In 2012, it's almost Spinal Tappian. Let's hope they bring the 12-inch Stonehenge.

Where ya been the past quarter century, Joe?

I like these limited runs and getting them to focus on their best material isn't a bad idea either.

I saw them about 5 years ago. They put on a good show. The vibe is similar to the Rolling Stones.
