Fantasy Springs Casino Fires Execs in Tax Fraud Probe
The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians fired three top executives months after it was learned the Internal Revenue Service was investigating a $145 million tax-exempt bond deal to help pay for the new Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
The tribe's business committee voted unanimously Thursday to fire Mark Nichols, chief executive officer of the desert band, chief operations officer Duff Wenz and director of public affairs Greg Cervantes in an effort to rein in mounting costs and tackle debt.
"Their strategy wasn't working, and they more or less refused to restrategize," tribal chairman John James said. "So this committee thought it was in the best interest of the tribe to get rid of them and get someone in there who will listen to the tribe."
Besides the IRS probe, the tribe disbanded its fire and police departments a month ago in an effort to save $5.5 million a year.
