Pencil: Southwest Offers One Free Night At Wynn Packages

Summer is nearly upon us and this means one thing... the heat starts to become unbearable in Las Vegas. This isn't to say that having your sneakers melt to the sidewalk isn't massive amounts of fun. When the mercury goes up, the room rates start to take a dive, particularly during the dog days of July and August.

To this end the wonderful folks at Southwest Airlines have launched an incredible summer sale on package deals to nearly every property in Vegas, including a mouth watering "one night free" deal for the combined Wynn & Encore property.

Get one night FREE and save up to $100 when you stay at Wynn Las Vegas or Encore. Use promo code: WR50APR or WR100APR. Book 4/13 - 4/26.

We've done tons of pencils of these Southwest deals, usually with positive results.... but that was during the deep dark days of the recession - what dearly departed Vegas Gangster Jeff Simpson called "the golden age of Vegas visitation." So will this deal pencil out, with hotel rates blooming and fuel prices approaching $5 per gallon?

We've set up a fictitious round trip (within offer dates) from Chicago (Midway) to Las Vegas (LAS) arriving on Tuesday July 10, 2012 (flt #127) and departing Las Vegas on Friday July 13, 2012 (flt #564) - a three night, mid-week trip. The total cost, for two people - airfare and three nights in a Deluxe Resort King at Wynn Las Vegas - comes to $1,077.40. It is unclear if the package deal includes the $25/night Wynn resort fee. Somehow we doubt it.

Now, we reverse engineer this offer by attempting to purchase the exact same items separately.

The price for the exact same flights - arriving #127, departing #564 - as booked via Southwest.com, came out to $671.20.

Wynn Southwest Package

The price for the exact same rooms - Wynn Deluxe Resort King - came to $602, $677 after you factor in the rotten $25/night resort fee.

Wynn Southwest Package

Flights : $671.20
Hotel : $677
Total: $1348.20

Package Price: $1077.40

Total Savings: $270.80!

This is even greater than "one free night" savings as advertised. If you have flexible dates, you could get away with murder with this deal. For those who don't like Wynn, this deal is also extended in discount form to tons of other Vegas hotels including LVH and Cosmopolitan.

Comments & Discussion:

I always find better deals with packages through Expedia, Orbitz, or Southwest Vacations from Chicago to Las Vegas than if I were to book seperate. Airfare from both MDW and ORD to LAS is not cheap these days. Spirit makes it look cheap but by the time you tack on all their random fees they cost as much as far better airlines.

2 years ago, I stayed 4 nights at the Wynn, including Airfare, over Memorial day weekend for $950 though an Expedia package. My most recent trip was 4 nights at the Venetian including airfare for less than what the Venetian wanted for the room alone if booked through their website. The Venetian is by far the worst for asking ridculous rates for direct bookings while consolidators have the same rooms for far less money.

I primarily play poker so I don't get enough comps to get free rooms so packages are my bread and butter. Once every couple of years, I can get free rooms at Bally's or the Flamingo.

Airfare in general is not cheap. For the VIMFP in October, I cashed in my SkyMiles and booked an award ticket. I had to spend about $150 to buy the 4000 SkyMiles I lacked, so with that and the $5 charge that covers fees, my round trip ticket cost me $155, which is a nice savings. I earn SkyMiles via my bank card and usually end up having enough SkyMiles to book an award trip every two years. Earning double miles on Delta purchases like bag fees and change fees take some of the sting out of that.

For comparison's sake, I ran these city pairs, dates and hotel over on the Delta Vacations website, and the cheapest package on Delta for two (including the resort fee) is $1323.15, which is less than booking the Southwest deal separately, but at the same time, the flights are not nonstop. But if the Southwest offer didn't include a free night, the prices would probably be practically a wash.

Couple of things:

1) The SWA Vacations deal didn't include the $25/day resort fee.

2) When I tried through the regular SWA site, with the same flights, it offered the Wynn at 30% off, so the whole thing came within a dollar or so of the Vacations price, but this did include the resort fee for an even better deal.

If you're looking, probably should check it out.
