Sting Bringing His Bass To Caesars

Few artists are as polarizing as former/current/future Police front man Sting. On one hand, he's the energetic bass player in an avant reggae new wave trio that miraculously straddled prog rock and pop punk. On the other hand he sits around singing melisma over 13th century lute twinklings.

Somewhere in between these polar opposites is Sting's solo catalog. From early experiments in AOR jazz pop to angular country to orchestral arrangements and back again, Sting has stuck his nose into every genre-filled blender. Unfortunately, a lot of it stinks.

Recently, Sting has announced his "Back to BASS" tour, offering fans a beacon of hope for what the setlist might be included. If it were up to me, I'd pepper the show heavily with tracks from "Ten Summoner's Tales," Sting's phenomenal 1993 solo album. In keeping with Sting's penchant for playing with monster sized drummers, the 1993 band was anchored by former Zappa wunderkind Vinnie Coliauta, who shines throughout. Nearly every track on Ten Summoner's Tales takes advantage of Coliauta's prowess, turning swamp rock into odd-metered freak outs ("Love Is Stronger Than Justice") and odd-metered freak outs into fluid brilliance ("Seven Days") and odd-metered freak outs into... odd-metered freak outs ("St. Augustine In Hell").

If you know this record, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's fucking awesome.

Bless your lucky stars... Sting is bringing the almost the exact same band out on the "Back To Bass Tour"... including guitarist Dominic Miller and... Vinnie Colaiuta.

As if that weren't enough, Sting is bringing the shinding to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the Friday after Thanksgiving... a perfect excuse to make a weekend of it.

The details:

Comments & Discussion:

Damn, I'm getting old, as Ten Summoner's Tales came out the year I graduated high school and was one of the first CDs I ever bought (I had gotten my first CD player the previous Christmas) that wasn't an R.E.M. CD (My first CDs were some of the early R.E.M. albums.).

Sting and (presumably if he doesn't cancel due to 'illness') Morrissey on the same night in Vegas. Wow.

I didn't even know Sting was into fishing.

I love how often you use the name Vinnie Colaiuta in this piece. But it would've been nice if you stuck in a "Hey, she gave me VD" in there somewheres.

^^ the thought crossed my mind. like a telefunken U-47

How about an epic rendition of Toad O' Line.

i like Family Guy's take on Sting:
