Chef Alex Stratta Leaving Wynn
Long time VT friend and one of our favorite local food writers, Brock Radke, has the news - via the Weekly - that Michelin starred chef Alessandro 'Alex' Stratta has left the Wynn organization.
Chef Stratta's history in Las Vegas started when the Wynn's invited Alex to take over the executive chef position at Mirage's Renoir in 1998 which he held until opening Wynn Las Vegas with his signature restaurant, Alex.
With Alex firmly established as the top dog in Wynn's culinary offerings, Chef Stratta took over the flailing Corsa Cucina, renovating the restaurants decor and menu until Stratta appeared.
Everything, for a while, it seemed like the sky was the limit on what Alex Stratta and Wynn Resorts could do. All that ended with the departure of Wynn Las Vegas property President of Andrew Pascal and the divorce of Steve and Elaine Wynn. In came a new regime, headed by former Harrah's executive Marilyn Winn Spiegel, who convinced Mr. Wynn that high end dining was dead and that the Alex space - and its Michelin stars - would better serve the company in mothballs only to be taken out for the occasional banquet or wedding reception.
Despite being kicked in the teeth, Chef Stratta wore a strong face through the upheaval, moving his focus to Stratta as well as competing on the third season of Top Chef Masters.
Chef Stratta is, was, and always will be a class act.... just not at Wynn.

Comments & Discussion:
Just got back from Vegas, and while there noticed that the Wynn had a decidedly un-Wynn feeling. Not sure what Uncle Steve's plan is for Wynncore, but it is teering on the edge of a douchey chasm from which there may be no escape.
