'Ka' - ching! - Cirque du Soleil Hits Jackpot

What does $170 million buy you these days? Well, if "you" happen to be Cirque du Soleil, that scrumptious sum adds up to "Ka," the latest mega-mega-production from the Montreal-based fantasy factory and the most expensive production ever mounted in the history of theater.

When the average Broadway show with a big-name star at the helm comes with a price tag of $15 million or thereabouts, the gasps among the artistic community can be heard from sea to shining sea. When this, the fourth Cirque production put down permanent stakes in the desert ("Mystere," "O" and "Zumanity" are already raking in millions at their respective theaters), not a whimper was heard. After all, this is the city of a soon-to-be $2 billion resort (Wynn Las Vegas).

Money spent here is indeed all relative.

But what of "Ka," with its top ticket price of $150? All I can say is, c'est fantastique! After seeing (and reviewing many) of Cirque's productions around the world, it's sometimes difficult to get that "wow" feeling deep down inside when I attend yet another production.
