Tropicana To Host Dubious Looking Film Festival
The Tropicana today trumpets the news that they will play host to the 3rd Annual Vegas Cine Fest, which, judging by their abominably unprofessional website, looks like another one of those "pay an entry fee, win a prize" jobbies.
One look at the poorly photoshopped pics of their advisory board and the Geocities 1997 style design of this Las Vegas Film Society page plus the $45 submission fee for all projects (they accept PayPal) gives this whole thing an air of dubious authority.
So, if you are an aspiring film maker, and want to part with $45 in the hopes that someone will give you an award, The Vegas Cine Fest at the Tropicana is ready and waiting. Shit, maybe VT should start its own Vegas Food Film Festival where we charge a $1 entry fee for every food prOn photo and give out awards... "Best French Entree in Black and White", "Best Instagram Filtered Dessert", "Best Turkey Club Twitpic", "Best Daikon Taken With A Nikon".... PROFIT!

Someone said on the hotel review page or somewhere that the Trop's marketing these days is all over the board. It's like they can't figure out if they want the beautiful people south beach crowd, or the history of the Trop/mobster crowd, or the wife-beater club/douche crowd, or their old quarter-bucket carrying crowd, or now the wine-drinking serious "film" crowd, or what.
I love the Trop, and change is great, but change for change's sake ("changing everything") doesn't work if you can't answer "to what?" I had no idea what was going on when I stayed there two weeks ago.
The Jackie Burger.Vegas Food Film Festival "Best Overall".
I'm a serious film person in the horror category, but I hate wine.
