A state assembly committee has approved a bill to require a legislative audit of the Las Vegas Monorail Company. It would be the first independent review of the system. And it would be meant to ensure that money bonded by the state is being used appropriately.

Members of the assembly transportation committee want to take a closer look at the monorail in light of its recent junk bond rating. Though the company is already required to submit an annual audit to the legislature, lawmakers want an independent review to dig deeper.

Earlier this session representatives of the Las Vegas Monorail sat before the assembly transportation committee much like they did on Thursday. Questions were asked and answered during an overview of the project, but not to the satisfaction of the committee chairman.
