Legends In Concert: The Grateful Dead* at The Joint October 4
Ok it isn't the Grateful Dead, but this band - Furthur is about as close as you'll ever get again.
Furthur, for those who don't know, is the sonic core of the Grateful Dead - bassist Phil Lesh and guitarist/singer Bob Weir. Over the last few years they've put together a(nother) band to carry on the tradition of the Good Ol' Grateful Dead to dose daddys and hippy mommas from sea to shining sea. By my count, this is possibly the third post-Dead (band centerpiece Jerry Garcia died in 1995) band they've done and by far it is the most Dead like of any of them.
Yeah, it is impossible for them to recapture the heights of 71 (RIP Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan) 72, 73, 74 & 77 (RIP Keith Godchaux) or the 80's resurgence (RIP Brent Mydland) but this band comes as close to lucidity as any of those. Couple the jizz fusion of the Phil & Friends and the wang doodling of Rat Dog with a bonafide second coming of Garcia Christ in John Kadlecik, the very Godchaux-ian Jeff Chimenti on keyboards and a new pair of drummers that don't have 70 year old arms, legs and feet and you've got some snappy uptempo crackling versions of the entire Grateful Dead catalog.
Let's compare... shall we?
The Grateful Dead: "Bertha" April 12, 1978
Further: "Bertha" May 25, 2010
Shocking. I'm not advocating that anybody spend their entire life trying to imitate anyone, but as far as Garcia clones... this guy has got it nailed to the wall... tone, taste and the fret buzz.
So, if you're in town and want to go see The Grateful Dead* for the first, five hundredth or final time... their upcoming gig at The Joint inside the Hard Rock on October 4th is a supremely excellent opportunity. Tickets ($53+ tax, tags, smog check and a tooth removal fee) are on sale Saturday June 11 at noon. This show will surely sell out.
