Trop Watch: New Food Court - South Beach Marketplace

From the Semi-Old News Dept. comes this week old slice of press release pizza from our friends over at the Tropicana... they've opened a new food court branded the "South Beach Marketplace."

Contained within are: Pellegrino Pizza & Deli quick takeaway deli/pizza joint from former Rao's and newly Bacio skillet flipper, Chef Carla Pellegrino; Nuudles: World Noodle Bar, Asian noodles, dim sum, dumplings and congee (ramen?); Naked Spoon a gelato & self serve yogurt shop a la Yogurtland and a Starbucks which purports to be the first of a new generation done in a fresh design that compliments their brand new logo and branding efforts.

We thank the Tropicana for opting not to invite Sbarro, Kentucky Fried Orange Panda Express and Pink Berry into their hotel. As for Starbucks, if we had our choice, we would've opted to put in a Peets Coffee.

They're changing everything!

This hotel is making HUGE changes...and so far...im my mind, they are all good

I'm not really aware of any differences between Peet's and Starbucks (if I remember right, the latter is based on the former) except that one lets me apply online and one doesn't. And one has it's own goofy credit card program with an iPhone (and third party Android) app and one doesn't.

The actual product doesn't seem much different to me.

Meh, I prefer Coffee Bean to both. There should be more Coffee Beans in Vegas, I can't be expected to drink all my coffee at the Venetian and airport.

peet's offers a richer, darker, stout brews and beans. i find coffee bean's roasts to be sour and weak, i do like their blended drinks tho. peets wins.

I love Peets, probably THE best coffee you can get...

Actually, you can make Peet's coffee taste just like Starbucks by shoving the spoon up your ass before stirring.

@sandy you win.

@encompassingimages everything except douchi err nikki beach makes sense, The trop used to be a low roller joint and from all reports, room reviews included, they are solidly attracting the mid-range/low rollwe clientele, yet Nikki Beach talks about luxury and exclusivity as if it were Encore Beach Club, Rehab, Tao, Marquee, etc. While I like the current changes to the Tropicana the Nikki Beach association is a miss in my opinion, the rest of the renovations are great!

When I stayed there last November I never ate a meal there during my five day stay so this is good news for me. The variety is much better than the food court across the street at Excalibur.

they shoulda went with Tim Hortons, and I don't even like coffee

Definitely needed there a welcome development and interesting choices.

Much like levans, I didn't eat at the Trop during my two nights there in March. At the time, it was the lack of any quick bites other than the sundries shop (Cafe Nikki did have some sort of counter one could order food to go.). I ended up going over to the MGM Grand to grab a light breakfast from Starbucks (I was having brunch at Mon Ami Gabi and wanted to have plenty of room for it.). I didn't get coffee, I got a pastry and one of their bottled coffee drinks.

Starbucks is horrible... If all you want is a cup of coffee, that totally depends on preference, but as for crafted drinks (lattes, cappucinos, etc)... Non-Chain > Peets > Coffee Bean > Starbucks.

Starbucks is the absolute worse as their staff doesn't know how to foam milk and more often than not are stingy with their concentrates (such as the chai for a chai latte). Then the blended beverages, they're "pre made" meaning you can't substitue one type of milk for another. Starbucks has really gone downhill, just as how Jamba Juice ever since they started charging for frigging orange juice which comes with the drink. Absurd.
