Howard Hughes: The Fear and Loathing Days

I loved "The Aviator." I love Martin Scorsese, Leonard DiCaprio, and am fascinated by the life of Howard Hughes. However, that film missed what many of us consider to be the most fascinatingly bizarre aspects of Hughes life: the Mysophobic, the Cosmopolitan "Raid the Minibar" package recluse days, and most importantly, the Las Vegas years. Actually, those can all sort of be condensed into one thing. Alright, I might also want to see his days at the Beverly Hills Hotel and that diet of Baskin Robbins and drugs that he subsisted on.

Well, according to a posting on /Film, we may soon be getting that portrait of Howard Hughes at his most paranoid and out-and-out deranged. Yes, it looks as if Christopher Nolan - director of The Dark Knight, Inception, The Prestige, Batman Begins, Insomnia, Memento and many more films - is preparing to mount Hughes: The Fear and Loathing Days (working title) as his directorial follow-up to next year's The Dark Knight Rises.

Yeah, it's not going to be nearly as good as Running Scared: The Film or Casino II: Electric Boogaloo may have been, but when one considers that one of the most respected and increasingly iconic directors in the film industry is preparing a trip into the world of 1960s/70s Las Vegas, well one just can't help but get a little hot and bothered. Moreover, based on the fairly positive relationship that Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio had reportedly fostered during the filming of Inception, it's just bananas to think that the actor could reprise his role as everyone's favorite overly-eccentric, reclusive billionaire. Oh, and let's not even mention the fact that there might be room in the film - however small and cameo-like - for a young Steve Wynn and his storied E. Parry Thomas/Hughes/Caesars Palace parking lot land play.

This is exciting news, everybody. Despite the fact that this project is all rumor and conjecture at this point, the mere prospect of this film coming to fruition is incredibly exciting. So exciting we've decided to cease saving. Anybody know where to get some mason jars, wholesale?

If you haven't already, check out Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia, and Palace Intrigue by Geoff Schumacher. I thought it was a great account of Hughes' Vegas days, and it will certainly tide you over until the movie becomes a reality.

This would be fantastic. Hope it turns into a reality.

I live a few miles away from the hangar where HH built the "Spruce Goose". I drive by often and try to catch a glimpse of the redwood interior. They film movies in the hangar now and that is about the only building that remains from his airport. Sad and amazing stuff.

One film I really need to see is MELVIN AND HOWARD, which partially deals with Hughes' Las Vegas days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvin_and_Howard

My favorite Halloween costume of all time. Kleenex boxes on the feet, glass jars and broken hypodermic needles.

I had a business acquaintence who I later found out, after he died, that he was in the co-pilots chair in the Spruce Goose on it's maiden and only flight.
I would have had so many questions to ask him.

In the three best movies depicting Howard Hughes, Hughes is a supporting character: Melvin and Howard, Hoax, and F for Fake. These movies are great! They give you a greater sense of why the man was a legend. Can't wait to see what Nolan has up his sleeve.
