From The Mailbag: Nitpicking Chuck's Lousy Writing

Every so often we like to dip into the mailbag and share some of the comments we get figuring that a lot of you might have the same comments/questions about the subject at hand.

This time we have two submissions, the first is from F. G., who gently pokes us in the ribs about my lousy writing. Take it away F.G.:

I enjoy your site a lot. I have a picky comment that I hope you take in the spirit it is given. "It's" always means "it is" and "its" is the possessive version of the pronoun "it." I keep seeing "it's" instead of "its" in your reviews.

- F.G.

Dear F.G.,
You are absolutely right and I sincerely apologize for my lousy linguistics. I completely understand the way its/it's is supposed to be used, I even had an its/it's lesson as my browser homepage for a coupla months about four years ago in the hopes that I stop screwing the pooch on this. I've tried. I really have. Bookmarks, books, blogs, post-it notes... I've finally come to the conclusion that I have some kind of learning disability that keeps me from remembering this and some other repeated spelling problems. I can't for the life of me spell reee-dick-you-las or ore-idge-in-all or priv-ull-idge after 30+ years of trying.

Or it's the booze.

Thank you FG, I heartily cop to being a semi-competent writer.

Our second email concerns how we code html in our blog posts and comes from Javier:

I think I might have a suggestion (maybe). When linking to external sites, maybe have them open up into a new tab/window? I think it might beneficial to you guys as it keeps the visitor on your site.
- Javier

Thank you Javier! We used to always "target" new windows when linking to external websites but stopped doing it a year or so ago. My thinking was that if folks want to open links in multiple tabs, they can right click to do that. If we force targeting, the user gets targeting whether they like it or not. I'm definitely curious to hear what y'all think about this... should we open links in new windows or stay in the same browser?

Comments & Discussion:

Stay in the same window. If people want to re-target, they can do it manually, as you indicated.

If I want something in a new tab, I do it myself. I use Chrome, btw. Does anyone care?

I like Target much better than Wal-Mart.

I think I'm the only one who likes when news sites point to external links in new windows/tabs (in the background, not the foreground, which should be a war crime). I'm used to ctrl+clicking now in case a site doesn't, but I appreciate when a site I regularly visit does.

I like keeping it in the same window.

After reading this thread, I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my brain. Team Tripping, Team Rate Vegas. Cocktail? Yes please.

I'd like links to open in a new window. I use a mac. I don't have right click. Just plain click.

I agree with D3wayne. also user's choice is better.

i prefer a new window, so my feeble brain doesn't lose track where it is/was.

"i have a great memory, it's just very very short" aka, the side effect of being an air traffic controller.

I'd prefer they open in new tab/window automatically

I automatically right-click for myself, so I don't need y'all to do it for me.

I appreciate where Javier is coming from, but forcing a new browser window in links is considered pretty passé in the world of user experience.

The thingie I use with my iPad to get on the Internet is something called "Safari", and it let's me keep up to 9 sites open. When I click on a link on many sites, it opens a new window. If that's what Javier is referring to, than I agree with Javier. I think it's cooler than a fothermucker
