TORRINGTON, Conn. -- Police have arrested a mother and son, accusing them of stealing more than $200,000 from an elderly woman they had befriended.

Lynda Gardner, 56, and Robert Ruggerio, 28, both of Torrington, were arrested Saturday in a hotel room at the Mohegan Sun Casino and charged with larceny and forgery.

Police said the couple used forged documents and an ATM to steal the money from the elderly woman who lived alone at Lakeridge, a private condominium complex of more than 400 units.

According to police, Ruggerio met the woman while working as a groundskeeper at Lakeridge. He introduced his mother, who offered to do housework and run errands, including grocery shopping.

The elderly woman suffered from health problems, but accepted Gardner as a confidante, Lt. Christopher Smedick said. Eventually, Gardner gained access to ATM cards and a checking account.
