Say It Ain't So: The Flamingo to Close in 2006
April 1, 2005 - After rampant speculation and rumor over the last 6 weeks, Harrah's Entertainment announced this morning that it will close the legendary Flamingo Hotel and Casino on December 26, 2006 - sixty years to the day that it was opened by gangster Bugsy Siegel. While this comes as a shock to Las Vegas visitors past and present, Harrah's management has stated that the closing of one of the crown jewels of the Strip is simply a matter of financials, and the 'out with the old, in with the new' way that Vegas has always done business. Plans for the closing of the Flamingo include a gala month-long celebration, followed by a spectacular implosion of the venerable hotel on New Years Eve 2006/7. So whats going to take the place of the Flamingo? Harrah's managment is still mum about future plans for the Flamingo site, however rumors are circulating that the short list of themes for the new resort are "New Orleans Riverboat" "Moscow" "Star Wars/Sci Fi Theme" and "NASCAR Racing".
