Making Planet Loveman A Better Place, One Soap At A Time

Harrah's Entertainment, known the world over for their statistical wizardry, has decided to enter a new field of business - irony alert - soap recycling.

The Harrah's Foundation donated $100,000 to the Orlando, Fla.-based Clean the World Foundation for development of a soap recycling facility in Las Vegas. The center will collect and sanitize soap and bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners and lotions) from casino hotels and then distribute the products to children and families in need throughout the United States and more than 40 countries. Unused amenities will be sorted for distribution among area homeless shelters, domestic abuse safe havens and women's shelters.

This is a fabulous idea. It truly is amazing how many of those little bars of soaps are discarded each year after only a half dozen washings of the post-zipline undercarriage.

How it works: unused soap will be collected by housekeeping staff - Harrah's has housekeeping? *rimshot* (h/t Vespajet) - and sent to the recycling plant which will recycle it for use by soap needing communities throughout the world. The end result is a better Planet Loveman.

In just eight weeks of the program, Paris/Ballys has collected one ton of soap!

We've heard rumor that The Mirage is currently starting its own program of recycling pubes.

Comments & Discussion:

I heard about Clean the World a few months ago and have been meaning to volunteer at it's Las Vegas facility. Not court mandated or anything, just for the greater good. We can beat on Harrah's all day and night, but 100k to help keep filthy kids clean is money well spent. Hopefully other companies will jump on board, because there really is no reason not to.

Sounds nice, but is it really cheaper to recycle used soap than to just make new soap?

is that gonna be like when my mom used to smoosh all the little soap ends together and make a nasty bar of odd scented, odd coloured soap?
