Las Vegas On Welfare

Over the past few weeks we've been hearing all manner of conjecture about the current state of Las Vegas, from the New Yorker magazine's assessment of City Center's architecture, to The New York Times' wide eyed look at the sorry state the economic nightmares have put the Las Vegas tourism industry.

Now, from the Los Angeles Times, comes word that Las Vegas is on welfare.... no not Nevada welfare assistance, but California's!! Over the last year California welfare recipients have withdrawn $12M in funds from their welfare ATM cards within the Nevada state lines.

Of the nearly $12 million accessed in Las Vegas, more than $1 million was spent or withdrawn at shops and casino hotels on, or within a few blocks of, the 4.5-mile strip. The list includes $8,968 at the Tropicana, $7,995 at the Venetian and its Grand Canal Shoppes, and $1,332 at Tix 4 Tonight, seller of discount admission for such acts as Cirque du Soleil.

Although many Las Vegas casinos block the use of welfare cards in ATMs on gambling floors, more than $34,700 has been spent or withdrawn from the ATM at a 7-Eleven in the shadow of Steve Wynn's new Encore casino and a couple of blocks south of Circus Circus

One has to wonder how the Tropicana's numbers may have been affected by the major renovations... I'm guessing that they would've done about 40% higher if the room rates didn't double over the last six months.

I wish I could pay for my Vegas shenanigans via a welfare ATM card!

Hmmm....I wonder how much of this is due to good old fashioned card fraud. It seems like everyone I know that's had a card stolen finds Vegas transactions on it. The $1M dollars of withdrawals in/around casinos sounds huge until you realize that the CA Income Assistance/CalWORKS programs made $2.5B of these payments last year. That makes the casino fraud amount 0.04% of total value....which is well within payment card fraud allowances.

This is not surprising at all. I wonder how much welfare money is used to buy lottery tickets in California.

"I wish I could pay for my Vegas shenanigans via a welfare ATM card!"

No, no... You really don't. This kind of suggests a serious level of deep addiction.

Considering the number of people I have seen in Vegas on some weekends this isnt really much of a shock.
