Attack Of The 72 Hour Sales

Looks like the MGM Resorts properties have been having some luck with the "limited time offer - you better book now or fugghetabboutit" 72 hour sales, as they've kicked off two of these today for Aria and Mandalay Bay / THEhotel.

Using a cursory check for dates surrounding the Vegas Podcast-A-Palooza (October 28 - Nov 2), Mandalay Bay Sale reveals:

Mandalay Bay Sale

Averaged out, equals ~$114/night. (Kayak.com quotes $138/night)

THEhotel Sale yields:

THEhotel Sale

Averaged out, equals ~$160/night.

And the ARIA 72 hour sale gives us:

Averaged out, equals ~$167/night (Kayak.com quotes $174/night)

So is this 72 hour sale a really good deal? No. The "rates from $72" is always good bait for clickthroughs, but unless the promises are backed up with eyepopping deals instead of mere point shaving, you'll find better deals elsewhere.

Speaking of bizarre pricing... for the same dates, this is what Kayak returned for those dates:

Huh? Either MGM is engaged in a whole bunch of wishful thinking or the Wynn folks aren't keeping their eyes on the ball here.

Comments & Discussion:

So what is the pricing philosophy behind Vdara? I stayed earlier when the rates were on par with Flamingo GO rooms. Clearly here they are pretty expensive. I just don't know what they're going for. I don't think anyone would pay this price, but clearly someone is or they wouldn't price it that high. I guess my question is, three years from now, am I still going to decide between Vdara and Flamingo GO rooms, or will they continue charging higher rates?

The answer is timing. Every season MGM tests the pricing waters to see what takers they can get before the real discounts are sent out. These 72hr prices represent just the first salvo for the fall. Expect another round of more significant discounts for this fall to be sent out towards the end of August.

I received emails today for Monte Carlo and Mirage, MC was 72 hour sale too from $39. Mirage was until Sept. 9th advertised as 30% off, but seeing prices as low as $56. I'm thinking we are going to see a fair number of offers for the fall in the players club. Currently almost all my PC offers go through end of October, only had two past that so far.
