Mandalay Bay: There's An App For That

Mandalay Bay? There's an app for that. Mandalay Bay iphone app

Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand have joined Caesars Palace in the app store fracas with their very own iPhone native applications. Both were built by MacroView Labs Inc., a company which provides programming know how for myriad mobile platforms and, most importantly for info junkie casino companies, analytical information on who, what, where, how and when folks use this application.

Big Brother aside, there are certainly a handful of interesting parts of these apps that might warrant downloading it to your iPhone before heading off for a jaunt to Mandalay Bay or MGM Grand.

The presentation of the information is clean, clear and concise, with copious amounts of photographs and background information about rooms, entertainment, shopping and dining options.

The addition of a click to call phone directory alone is worth the price of admission (FREE) as is the presence of real time "special offers" which could eventually be used as push notification to discount tickets, dining discounts or the presence of a celebutard at one of the many bars and clubs.

One of the more interesting features is the ability to "bookmark" stuff to "My Mandalay Bay" to remember later. The UI is a bit of a failure as that icon is for forwarding or sharing, not saving. (the icon should be downward arrow above a tray.)

The Mandalay Bay app also has the ability to send convention event specific information to a user who types in a pass key given to them by their event organizer. Having the ability to send messaging to thousands of conventioneers is an excellent concept, but will these folks actually go thorough the trouble of adding the app and typing in the pass codes? Probably not.

As expected, there is a gaming guide, which features rules and how to for most casino table games. Also as expected, the advice comes straight from the Clark Griswold School of Gambling.

Even as a total casino junkie, I don't really see any reason to download and keep ANY casino advertisement app on my phone unless I were already booked to stay at the joint in question. Even then I would probably download it the day before the trip and delete it the day I got home.

Comments & Discussion:

Good catch with the blackjack definition. It's more than semantics--if the casual gambler really believes they have to get as close to 21 as possible, they'll likely throw basic strategy right out the window (of course, they won't know what it is in the first place) and follow the house rules. Good for Nevada gaming revenues, but probably a recipe for a bad time at the tables that might persuade people that gambling isn't for them.

Looks like a pretty good first effort that could evolve into something quite useful.

The M-Bay app looks quite good. If I had an iPhone, I'd download it... Especially since I'll be at THEHotel in 2 weeks! And come on, when was the last time we saw a casino guide from that casino that offered "advice" that actually benefitted the player?
