Steve Cyr Has Definitely Left The Building

Pre Vegas 2.0 before the themes were scrapped and The Steveness wasn't repeating over and over, "The only thing left was to do the basics better," the Las Vegas Hilton had a respectable repertoire of the highest of high rollers; quite a feat considering their terrible location and shagginess around the edges.

A number of factors could account for its mystique and appeal in recent years. Besides the obvious Elvis connections, Hilton was the backdrop of superhost Steve Cyr's biography Whale Hunt in the Desert where his charm and quick thinking had high rollers choosing the old cougar over Venetian, Bellagio, and MGM. More recently, it played host to the Louis Theroux documentary Gambling in Las Vegas where another ultrahost, Richard Wilk, showered one of his biggest clients with jets and Neiman Marcus gift cards.

But Hilton's most lavish claim to fame is in the form of its three top floor penthouses. Before Palms and Aria adopted the moniker for their best suites, Hilton's Sky Villas at one point were among the biggest hotel accommodations in the world with its largest, the 15,000 square foot Verona, having only recently been ousted by Caesars Palace's Forum Tower Penthouse. As the famous anecdote goes, even Bill Gates was denied entry to the Verona years ago:

"Not even for $25,000 a night?!"
br /> "Not even for $25,000 per hand."

So how do I know Steve Cyr has left the building? How do I know Richard Wilk isn't wooing the whales there any more? Because now you can actually book the Sky Villas online with most weeknights running a mere $7000. The kicker? They're even offering AAA and senior discounts of 10% bringing the price down to $6300. Yes, now the bachelor party that was once considering paying more at Palms can rest their heads in the very same room that the richest man in the world was denied of.

Ultra LOL.

(And for those of you curious, Cyr is now independent while Wilk is comping post-Rehab antibacterial body sanitizer at Hard Rock.)

Comments & Discussion:

Coincidence, just got an email today from the Palms for 25% off to rent out their suites including the Playboy "sky villa" with infinity pool.

I got that palms email too. You can also get a pretty good deal on the mirage villas and of course the MGM Mansion is yours for only 5k a night. i saw that encores apt suites were about 2k a night to now.. Thank god for the recession! Did i just say that?

mctrees02 forwarded that e-mail along to me as well. Interesting as that is the first time they've publicly discounted those rooms. I say "publicly" because I'm willing to bet they go for much, much less to companies with large catering bills or even modest high rollers.

Verona is actually a sweet deal at $7000 a night. The place is mind-blowing. The views outstanding as you sit just off The Strip a little bit.

I wouldn't think twice about booking it for a corporate event (and then getting the use of it the rest of the evening).

Cyr had a hell of a run. His book is still a fun read.
