Penciling Out United Vacations Las Vegas Sale

It's become standard operating procedure for smart tourists to view package deals with a degree of suspicion. Nobody wants to get caught holding the bag on a package deal when hotel rates or plane tickets do their loopdiloops, particularly when you book really far in advance.

United Vacations - the travel agency / vacation package wing of United Airlines - has just launched a large sale on Las Vegas packages, with the tag line that promises savings of $100. We decided to put the offer to the pencil test. The mathematics are a slight bit complex, so put down the Chivas for five minutes and put on your thinking cap.

To start our query, we chose three nights surrounding ARIA's opening as our "trip" departing from Chicago. To compare, we scraped the prices from each of the hotel websites for the dates in question AND checked United.com to see what they are charging for the flight included in the package ($368 pp).

The numbers in BLUE below the black boxes are United Vacations' quote for FLIGHT AND HOTEL FOR TWO, with no taxes or fees (resort or air) included. The numbers in RED are the room rates scraped from hotel websites. The number in GREEN is the difference between BLUE and RED.

The magic number here is $736, which is the cost of a flight for two from our departure point to Las Vegas. Subtract $100 of advertised savings from it to get $636.

The most compelling values are the properties that have the lowest GREEN number. In this sampling, THEhotel, Vdara, Wynn Las Vegas, TI and Encore are the best value options, you getting more room bang for your buck. If you are purse conscious, TI and THEhotel are complete steals here.

VALUE = $638 - (BLUE - RED)

The less compelling values are properties whose GREEN number is greater than or equal to $638. Here' the big losers are Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Luxor and Trump. The package runs until November 15th.
