Esquire: Society Cafe Is One Of The Best New Restaurants In America

Guess who's got two hands, is inspired by Oscar Wilde, and was just declared one of the best new restaurants in America? *points to self* That's right, this restaurant.

All douche-y puns and mannerisms aside, the good folks at Wynn Las Vegas announced today that Kim Canteenwalla's super-chic, super-sexy, super-tasty Society Cafe Encore--aka Society, aka Encore Cafe Society, aka Cafe Society Encore, aka Ozzy's Addiction, aka Little Stevie Weinberg--has been crowned one of the best new restaurants in America by the epicurean masterminds at Esquire.

Now, the full list of 2009's recipients hasn't been announced yet, but judging by last year's honorees, Society is among distinguished company. New York's Bar Boulud, Bar Blanc, and Scarpetta made the list. Chicago's delectable and innovative Merkat a la Planxa and L20 are up there. And now, Las Vegas' best late night, but not quite all night cafe has made it. It's a great day to be a fan of food and Las Vegas, everybody.

Now, the press release lists some of Society's signature dishes, like the BBQ Filet Mignon and "sloopy Joe" sliders, but myself, oh I'm quite partial to their delicately awesome Fish and Chips, and for breakfast, there is almost nothing in Las Vegas better or more decadent than their Frosted Flake French Toast. I'm drooling just thinking about those delicious bananas, the chocolate cream, and... back to the piece.

All of us can agree that the restaurant's pretzel bread and homemade mustard butter are an incredible and welcome "twist" on the traditional tableside bread and butter. And we can all agree that the restaurant really is one of the best new spots in the city and America, if not the world.

Mmmmmm, you can just barely make it out, but I think I hear Steve Wynn toasting Canteenwalla with a glass of champagne in one hand and one of Grandma Rose's Meatballs in the other right now. God, to only be in one of those pink banquettes tonight.

Congratulations, Society, you deserve it.

Next up: Sinatra gets the Mobile Five Star and a couple of those Michelin Red Pavilions.

Comments & Discussion:

I know Chuck's not a big fan but I love this place and try to go there every trip to Encore.

I always felt Society was a great concept that struggled early on with very poor execution. The menu is interesting, but the service was lacking. I think the addition of the bar was a big step in the right direction. Now, if they would just serve food at the bar and remain open 24hrs I would really be sold.

Really? This restaurant was great when it started and since has fallen after the Opening Period Effort left.

The room is frequently pretty uncrowded at dinnertime and yet it was still hard to get service. Contrast to opening where the service was almost steakhouse-ish even while the crowd line snaked down to the entrance.
