Venetian/Palazzo Lowest Price Guarantee? I'll Take The Challenge!

The Venetian/Palazzo have added some bold and potentially lucrative guarantees with their room reservations:

"The 'Suite-est' Rate Guarantee is our promise to you that the best rates on suites are always available right here on www.venetian.com.

If you find a lower rate for The Venetian [or The Palazzo] on any other Web site after making a suite reservation within 24 hours on Venetian.com, simply submit a 'Suite-est' Rate Guarantee claim form to us and we'll honor the lower rate and give you a complimentary upgrade to the next luxurious suite level.

This guarantee makes the assumption that you're not going to bother looking around when they're willing to refund you the difference AND upgrade you. You're comfortable standing by the old adage that booking directly with the hotel is the best way to go. Maybe that was true at one time, but the "Suit-est Rate" has been around since the days Wall Street was went gaga over LVS' $26 IPO. Those were also the days when looking for the best rates was an extremely tedious and time-consuming process requiring nearly a dozen browser windows open.

But things have changed over the years. When at one point, a typical Venetian customer might not have found that filling out a lower rate claim was worth the time to save a few bucks a night, now he might find it a worthwhile effort. That, and the fact that there's now this little thing called Kayak.com that does all the tedious travel searching - including rates on the hotel's own website - for you.

The results? Podcast-a-Palooza weekend through Venetian.com for a "Luxury Suite": $602.56 including taxes. Thanks to Kayak, I stumbled upon gtahotels.com that's offering the same room for $542. That's a difference of $60.56.

But don't forget, if you bring this rate back to the Venetian, your entitled to an upgrade, too, which isn't more than a guaranteed high floor and good view. Nevertheless, you'd then be looking at a savings of $194.96 had you booked the exact same room type directly through Venetian.

Not exactly chump change.

Comments & Discussion:

I always take these "lowest price guarantees" with a grain of salt. Today the smart consumer will do price shopping and find the lowest price that they are willing to live with.

Besides have you ever read the fine print of these guarantees and see what it takes to actually activate the guarantee and get your over payment back? Getting Congress to agree on health care and illegal alien boarder security would be easier than all the hoops they make you jump through to collect on these guarantees. Normally they just come back and say that only retail bookings qualify and the lower price you found was part of a wholesale block of rooms and doesn't qualify.

Bottom line, before you book if you think you found a lower price, call up the direct hotel reservations people and let them know the rate. More times than not they will match it without you having to do anything more.
