$109 for the Nugget's New Rush Tower: Would You Do It?

Golden Nugget Rush Tower

Running comparisons between the strip and downtown are a little unfair when a single strip resort can have more fine dining establishments and nearly as many rooms as the whole of Fremont Street.

But downtown's appeal is in its more-favorable games at low minimums and $40-per-night weekends, right? Then what the hell is Golden Nugget thinking having a starting price of $109 for its new Rush Tower? Boasting of 439 square foot rooms, pillow-top mattresses, and 42-inch plasma televisions doesn't mean much when you can stay on the strip, get all that, and beat the size by nearly 100 square feet for about the same price. Now, I'm a sucker for exclusive and dedicated porte cocheres, valets, and front desks which the Rush Tower offers, but is that going to appeal to the typical downtown customer?

Here's predicting the Rush Tower will be much like Caesars' Augustus: overpriced, but easily comped or upgraded to.

Comments & Discussion:

Not to mention that if you read the fine print on the booking page for GN's Rush Tower, you will find fine print that says "Parties in our suites are prohibited."

Guess that means don't plan to hold any bachelor or bachellorette parties or any sort of business hospitality suites in these rooms at Golden Nugget. That also means you won't be able to bring one of those working women from the streets around the GN, back to your room for a party.

I'm booked in the Rush Tower for Thanksgiving Weekend (The new tower is scheduled to open about six days prior to my arrival.), and for four nights in a Rush Tower Deluxe room, the rate averages $131.50 a night. The rate for the North Tower Deluxe rooms was only about $5 or so dollars a night less.

I'm guessing that they will eventually hike the room rates for the Rush Tower and are running these lower rates to get folks to check out the new rooms.

We are still a couple months from opening, so they are just trying to gauge interest and book as many nights at the highest practical rate. I think the GN is actually transforming into a nice little property and is by far the best downtown. I think just under $100 is probably about right, so they are not totally delusional (like the rack rates for Venetian and Aria). Yes, the rooms are incredibly small but also nicely appointed. I would expect to see discounts appearing around the end of September.

Speaking of the rack rates for the Venetian, I was on there last night looking at prices for our week in December and they wanted anywhere from $220-$289 a night for rooms that week. When I called and told them I had a club Grazie card (with a whopping 90 points on it) the rate went down to $159/night but if I booked over the phone RIGHT NOW and paid the entire week in full, my rate would be $130/night.
That's not to shabby for a refurb room at the Venetian. I didn't take the offer, the lady told me to just call back and ask for it when I'm ready to book. Gave me her name and everything.

I spoke a bit too soon, because as the result of an email offer I just received from the GN and called them about, my Rush Tower Deluxe Room is averaging that magical $109/night price point.
