A Craftsteak Quickie
Last week, I had the pleasure of trying Craftsteak's Summer Tasting Menu for the second year in a row. While I'm not fond of hitting the same dinner spots when there are so many unexplored options, Craftsteak is one exception I'll be willing to make again and again.
The menu may look a bit misleading - there are no choices to be made for each course; you indeed get everything listed with servings proportional to the size of your party.
The grilled quail is incredible while the Angus skirt steak will make you leave your manners behind over who gets the last piece. The chef's selections of desserts included mouth-watering chocolate fudge brownies and monkey bread among other selections. Indeed, it seemed like the largest course was dessert; nobody in our party was complaining.
But the food was out shined only by our phenomenal waiter (ask for Victor). Despite a late seating, service was top notch from start to finish. Victor asked us who had been to the restaurant before and I was the only one to say yes. He thanked me for my return visit and my recommending the restaurant to others. Later on in the night, when dessert was served, all six in our party received the sommelier's special selection of dessert wine despite the fact that only three of us had opted for the wine pairings. It was Victor's way of thanking me for my return patronage. Incredible.
Automatic gratuity of 18% was added to the bill. We left an extra $30 and they returned with the check to make sure we understood that gratuity had already been included - thoughtful gesture.
Steve Wynn once described MGM's Mansion as something to the extent of a jewel trapped in a vast sea of mediocrity, but I'd argue that Craftsteak is yet another gem within the green giant.

I've never been to the Craftsteak at MGM LV before, but I've been twice to the version at MGM @ Foxwoods in CT. I had a most amazing experience both times. Both meals were perfect and the service was outstanding. The quality of both the meal and service ALMOST justified the prices.
^^ hysterical.
i've been to craft in LV and in LA and both were phenomenal.
My wife and I are big Top Chef fans, and we keep joking that we're going to hit Craftsteak one of these days just to be overly critical of the food. Give Tom Colicchio a taste of his own.
By the way, Bravo is running promos for the new season of Top Chef that feature a slot machine. Anyone know if this year's show is set in Vegas?

Better than the experience at my kid's last birthday party at one of those inflatable indoor bounce places. In the "getting 20 kids out as our time was up" rush, I tipped our party hostess. The girl failed to tell me that my wife had also generously tipped her just a minute or two prior. Dishonest. Lame. The hostess won, but her employer lost. We won't be back.
Maybe next year we'll take the party to Las Vegas. ;-)
@misnomer - yes, its in vegas.
the food was ok. but i swear the star of the whole joint (the LV one) is the whisky menu, with some fantastic flights/verticals, and superlative whisky sommelier. i'd go just for that.
