Beef Jerky, Mr. Negreanu?
The 2009 World Series of Poker is currently roaring forth at the Rio, with Bluff Magazine streaming final tables live on the internets.
While watching the stream of Event #14 ($2,500 6 handed Limit Hold 'Em) I saw one of the strangest things... a bowtie wearing waiter circled the table offering players their choice of large colorful bags of beef jerky. Whether they wanted one or not, a bag of the dehydrated beef was placed on the mini drink tables next to each player. Unfortunately, I was too slow on the draw to get a screen grab.
I get it, this is product placement for Jack Link's Beef Jerky, the 'official sponsor' of the World Series of Poker. Instead of just pasting the Jack Link's logo on to the felt like Milwaukee's Best, or sponsoring the 'All In Moment' + 'check mark' a la Degree, Jack Link's is putting bags of their product next to the players. Obviously, this is infers that if you eat that stuff, you'll win a poker tournament.
What if the player finds beef jerky objectionable for health or moral reasons? Poker legends Howard Lederer and Daniel Negreanu (Daniel finished 2nd at this event) are both vegan. Wouldn't having a big bag of flesh a foot away from them be an unfair distraction?
I'm curious if WSOP players have the power to refuse association with corporate sponsor proximity placement marketing, and whether or not this is addressed in whatever release forms they have to sign as part of entering the event.
If any of you have a copy of the contract, please get in touch.
