If you don't give a hoot about the business side of things but like to go to Tahoe from time to time, here is what you need to know: Horizon is changing management/ownership... as a result they have to cut the number of gaming positions on the floor down to 200 until the new mgr/owners get licensed. Sayonara table games and a ton of slot machines. The good news is that you can still play Sigma Derby at Horizon for the time being.
If you are familiar with the train wreck that is Columbia-Sussex' casino operations, the explanation that follows will make a whole bunch of sense (sarcasm). Tropicana Entertainment has passed the lease of Horizon to Lake Tahoe Realty I, a newly formed division of Columbia-Sussex.
Yes, Tropicana Entertainment - a fire walled off subsidiary of Columbia-Sussex due to myriad legal/bankruptcy issues - has given a piece of its Tahoe property base (by far the lowest rung in Tahoe's pecking order) back to Columbia Sussex via a subsidiary company. Tropicana Entertainment plans to focus its Lake Tahoe efforts on Montbleu, formerly Caesars Tahoe.
I'm sure that their lawyers have looked at all sides of this plan, but it seems kinda sneaky to me. For our money, you should stay at Harrah's Tahoe or Harveys, as Montbleu screwed our pooch.
